About the butterfly garden website, photography & me

The Butterfly Garden website

It started as a personal website at the turn of the millenium, when I moved to Cirencester in Gloucestershire from 12 miles south of here in North Wiltshire. I have planted butterfly-attracting plants in both the Wilts.& Glos. gardens. I have been taking photos since 1997 & keeping records since 1999.

I staged a photographic exhibition about "gardening for butterflies" at the Cirencester Bingham Library in 2001 and created a supporting website. Read more about this website.

Photography

I bought a Nikon Coolpix 4500 in the summer of 2003 & many of the 2003 images on this site are from that digital camera. Previously I used a Canon EOS 500 SLR camera with a 100mm macro lens. Read my notes about photographing butterflies.

About me

What would you like to know? I'm an Englishwoman who has been gardening for over 20 years. I became interested in gardening for butterflies when I lived in Dorset & I used to read all the gardening books at the local library, including one called "The Butterfly Gardener".

On the evening of 14 July 2004, my doctor came to my house to tell me that I had acute leukaemia. I went into hospital the following morning and stayed for 4 months of chemotherapy. Consequently, there are few butterfly records for 2004. I was busy photographing butterflies again in 2005 but the leukaemia came back in the autumn.
